It's not stage hypnosis!
Clinical Hypnosis is a form of therapy focussing on the needs and wishes of the client or patient. It is used entirely for his or her benefit, to maximise the potential for change and improvement. Stage hypnosis is a quite different process, using the volunteer as a stooge for the entertainment of an audience. There are some connections, in that both use the hypnotic trance, and some stage hypnotists also are very effective as therapists. But stage hypnosis creates an unfortunate impression, and many people who come to us for therapy need reassurance that we are not going to make them strut about the room flapping their arms like chickens' wings, or take a bite from a lemon! Clinical Hypnosis is conducted in a trusting therapeutic relationship in which the patient or client works as an active partner with the therapist.
The power of imagery and the imagination
The science we learn at school doesn’t tell us enough about how our brains work, or about the neurology of how we feel and think, or how our bodies behave. Of course this is highly complex stuff, but we all know examples of how it can work. Pause for a moment and imagine putting your hand in a bowl of freezing cold water filled with ice cubes! At first you can't quite work out whether the water is hot or cold: then you touch the ice cubes and your hand begins to sense just how cold it is and as you imagine this, do you feel the beginnings of a shiver or a tingling or even numbness in your fingers? Yet all you've done is to imagine! Or, if you saw it, do you remember how you reacted to the film 'ET'? Did you find yourself moved to tears by the little being saying ‘home’, even though you knew he was only a plastic model? The mind is so responsive to the imagination: the power of the imagination and the mind's responsoveness to suggestion can be applied in so many helping and healing ways.
So what is a hypnotic trance?
In everyday life we only use a small fraction of our mental powers. In Clinical Hypnosis your therapist helps you focus your latent mental powers through the dreamy, relaxed state known as 'hypnotic trance'. The trance state helps you mobilise the creative side if your mind, using imagery, suggestion and feelings to open up all sorts of new possibilities.
In trance you are deeply relaxed - but you don’t go to sleep. You remain conscious and your mind is sharply focussed. You retain all your faculties and you are in control. You won’t do anything you don’t want to, and most people respond in ways that make a huge difference in achieving their goals. With the help of a skilled therapist, you can achieve lasting and positive change in how you think, how your body feels, your emotions and mood state, and how you behave.
